Rize of the Fenix, Tenacious D

When NBC first awarded Late Night to Jimmy Fallon a few years back, I, like many other folks, wasn’t excited by the move. We knew Fallon only as the immature comic who ruined all the sketches on SNL by laughing.

But years later, Fallon’s late-night show is the best on television, featuring bits like the comedian playing Password with Betty White, staging Saved By the Bell and Cosby Show reunions, and getting Bruce Springsteen to show up to sing with Fallon’s Neil Young impersonation on a preposterous cover of Willow’s “Whip My Hair.”

Many of the bits from Fallon’s show, including “Whip My Hair” and a duet with Paul McCartney on a comedic version of “Yesterday,” appear on Blow Your Pants Off, which is the leading contender to win the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album.

Fallon could be challenged by Lewis Black, whose Daily Show appearances and ranting lunatic persona have a certain appeal. Black is a two-time winner of this award, so he’s the likeliest to knock off Fallon.

As for the other nominees, Tenacious D used to be popular, but Rize of the Fenix wasn’t very funny at all. It was musically intriguing, with Dave Grohl on drums, but since this isn’t an award for the most musically impressive comedy album, Jack Black and Kyle Gass are out.

Kathy Griffin and Margaret Cho both appeal to the exact same demographic, and given that no woman has won this award since 1986(!), they have very little chance here (sorry ladies!) Jim Gaffigan may have more of a chance, but he still figures to be a longshot.

The prediction here is that Jimmy Fallon, who was also nominated back in 2003, beats out Lewis Black to get his first Best Comedy Album Grammy win.
