Best Dance Recording was created in 1998 to reward dance singles. In 2012, the Recording Academy stopped allowing mainstream pop artists to compete, so artists like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga were removed in favor of EDM acts.

In 2024, the Academy created a new category called Best Pop Dance Recording for those artists. This award remains designed specifically for acts who primarily work in dance music.
