When Is the Next Grammy Awards Show?
The 2027 Grammy Awards will take place in late January or early February 2027. The specific date has yet to be announced. The show will air on ABC for the first time, after 50+ years on CBS.
The eligibility window for the 2027 Grammys runs from September 1, 2025 to August 30, 2026.

What Happened at the Last Grammy Awards?
The 68th Annual Grammy Awards took place on February 1, 2026 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
The top nominees were Kendrick Lamar (9), Cirkut (7), Jack Antonoff (7), and Lady Gaga (7).
Lamar won five awards. Bad Bunny won Album of the Year. Antonoff won Record of the Year as a producer, allowing him to join the exclusive club of people who have won all of the “Big Four” Grammy Awards.

About the Grammy Awards History and Voting Process
When were the first Grammy Awards held?
The first Grammy Awards were held in May 1959, to honor the music of 1958. A second ceremony was held in November 1959, to honor the music of 1959. No ceremony was held in 1960.
Generally, in terms of record-keeping, the late 1959 ceremony is called the 1960 ceremony. Starting in 1961, the Grammys became an annual event.
That means the 2027 Grammy Awards will be the 69th annual ceremony, and the 2028 Grammys will serve as the 70th anniversary.
Who votes for the Grammys?
The Grammys are the only major music show voted on by the performers themselves. The artists vote for their peers. Voters include bands, singers, musicians, songwriters, producers, record company executives, etc.
How many people vote for the Grammys?
Currently, the Recording Academy is made up of roughly 15,000 voting members.
Membership has dramatically increased since the early 2020s, when Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason, Jr. began efforts to diversify the Academy, making it younger and adding more women and members of color.
In 2025, 1000 members of the Latin Recording Academy, who vote for the Latin Grammys, were offered membership into the traditional Recording Academy, which means they now vote for the traditional Grammys as well.

How does music get submitted for the Grammys?
Members of the Recording Academy can submit their own work. Others must have their record company make submissions via the Online Entry Process.
When all submissions are received, screening committees review them and make sure that entries are placed in the appropriate genre categories. Then, Academy members vote twice — first, to select the nominees, and then, to select the winners.

Are there “secret review committees” the choose the nominees?
For the most part, no. Not anymore. Starting in 1996, the nominees in the Big Four categories were selected by a secret panel of music business insiders. They would take the top 15-20 vote-getters from the initial round of voting, and select the 5 nominees from that shortlist.
This was done because the Grammys had earned a reputation as being out of touch with current music, and then CEO Michael Greene did not trust the full voting body to make the right choices. After 1996, the nominees became more current and cutting edge.
As the years went on, the review committee concept was brought to many more fields, including Country, Dance, Rock, Rap, and R&B. At one point, more than 50 categories had their nominees selected by committees.
But the committees were criticized by some fans and media members, and some artists who questioned why they weren’t getting nominated. After the Weeknd was snubbed for “Blinding Lights” in 2021, Mason removed the review committees entirely in 2022.
Today, only a small number of technical categories (like Producer of the Year and Best Immersive Audio Album) use review committees.
Some observers believe that the committees were actually good for the Grammys, and the show is suffering without them.

Grammy Categories
How many Grammy categories are there?
As of 2027, there are 101 Grammy categories (see the full list here.) They are constantly changing and updating categories, and adding new ones. They added 5 new awards for 2027.
At one time, there were as many as 109 categories, before a substantial reorganization in 2012 cut the field to 78 awards. At the time, changes were made because it was believed that, with so many categories, winning a Grammy was no longer special.
However, in the decade since then, they’ve crept back up to 101 categories, adding one or two new categories per year, on average. Despite that, there’s still no Best Pop Song award for songwriters.

How many awards are presented on the Grammy broadcast?
In recent years, the show only presents around 9 awards during its 3.5-hour broadcast. Producers prefer to have more live performances and fewer award presentations.
The remaining 87 awards get presented earlier in the afteroon at the Premiere Ceremony, an untelevised event that streams on grammy.com.
What are the “Big Four” awards?
The Grammys consider Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist to be the “Big Four.” These awards are open to artists of all genres.
Who has won all of the “Big Four” awards?
So far, only 4 people in 70 years have won all of the Big Four. Christoper Cross (“Sailing”) was the first to do so in 1981, followed by Adele in 2012, and Billie Eilish in 2020.
Producer Jack Antonoff became the fourth and most recent member of the club when he won Record of the Year in 2026, having already won Song and Album of the Year as a producer/songwriter, and Best New Artist with fun. in 2013.

What’s the difference between Record and Song of the Year?
Record of the Year is given to the artist, the producers, the engineers, and the mixers. It is for the overall quality of the finished track.
Song of the Year, meanwhile, is given only to the songwriters. It is for the creation of the melody and lyrics. Read more about the differences between these two awards.
Has there ever been a tie at the Grammys?
Yes. In fact, there have been a whopping 34 ties in Grammy history! Most of the ties happen in the afternoon, non-televised ceremony, but occasionally, a tie will take place on the air.
