A band that blossomed from the Riot Grrrl scene and took its bold, outspoken sound to the mainstream, Sleater-Kinney carved out a unique place for themselves, one that remains loved by fans, artists, and critics.
Despite forging an inspiring path, Sleater-Kinney have not been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Let’s look at their credentials, why they deserve a spot, and why they have been ignored by the institution so far.
Sleater-Kinney’s Rock Hall Credentials
Sleater-Kinney, spearheaded by Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein, is widely regarded as one of the most successful bands with roots in the Riot Grrrl movement, bringing the movement’s sound and ethos to a more mainstream audience.
Their 1997 breakout album, Dig Me Out, became one of the best-selling indie releases from late ’90s feminist rock and has appeared on “best albums of all-time” lists from multiple publications. Their 2005 release, The Woods, even reached #80 on the Billboard 200, an impressive feat for a punk-leaning indie band with no radio hits to its name.
Critics also loved The Woods and The Hot Rock, as well as the group’s 2015 comeback album, No Cities To Love, which received near-universal acclaim 10 years after they went on hiatus. In 2001, Greil Marcus, writing for Time, went so far as to call them “America’s best rock band.”
While Sleater-Kinney are considered to have taken their Riot Grrrl punk roots into a more mainstream arena, their songwriting and playing are often regarded as having transcended the conventions of the genre.
While maintaining their politically charged and feminist lyrics, as well as their powerful punk-inspired vocals, they expanded their sound creatively by incorporating unexpected chord changes and developing a unique call-and-response sound with two guitars, rather than including a conventional bass guitar in their musical lineup.
The band has had an influence on many musicians today, including the Linda Lindas and Big Joanie, as well as St Vincent, who shared that, upon listening to their album All Hands On The Bad One, she “promptly went and mail-ordered every other Sleater Kinney record at the time” and “had their posters on [her] wall.”
It’s clear that Sleater-Kinney helped introduce a powerful musical movement to a broader audience, expanded upon their roots with creative songwriting, received critical acclaim, and influenced future generations of musicians. So why haven’t they been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?
The Case Against Sleater-Kinney
Sleater-Kinney has had modest commercial success, with no major radio hits and no singles on the Billboard Hot 100. As the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame tends to value measurable success, this works against their chances of getting inducted into the Hall.
The Hall of Fame has also been slow to recognize punk and indie artists. While classic punk bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols have been inducted, many of the punk movements that followed in subsequent decades have yet to be recognized by the institution.
Similarly, while some bands that started on independent labels and built big followings through grassroots methods have been inducted, only those that achieved massive mainstream commercial success, such as Nirvana and Radiohead, have been inducted.
Sleater-Kinney are also well known for its anti-establishment message, with many of their lyrics criticizing mainstream culture and institutions. They may be considered by some to be too politically charged to fit in with a mainstream institution like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Finally, Sleater-Kinney has not been eligible for induction for very long, gaining eligibility in only 2021. It can take some time for bands to begin receiving nominations, so it would be a significant move for a band to be inducted only a few years after becoming eligible.
The Verdict: Will Sleater-Kinney Ever Get Inducted Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
While there is a chance that Sleater-Kinney will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame one day, that chance is currently low. Despite their creativity, critical acclaim, and profound influence, their punk sound lack of commercial success do not work in their favor.
Something that may turn the tide and raise their chances is if the Hall of Fame decides to start paying punk and indie bands their due. If we begin to see more bands from these genres being inducted, then there is a good chance that this influential band will follow.
