Though tonight’s TV Land Awards were all about television, music was a big part of the show, from house band the B-52s to the impressive performance by Aretha Franklin.
The B-52s played some of their biggest hits during the broadcast, including “Love Shack” and our personal favorite, “Roam,” on which Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson took the vocal lead.
Franklin’s performance was a huge highlight. She was introduced by multiple Grammy winner John Legend, who sang a few lines of an Aretha song himself.
The Fly Girls were included as part of the tribute to ’90s sketch comedy show “In Living Color.” Aside from Fly Girl Jennifer Lopez and singer-actor Jamie Foxx, nearly every member the cast was on hand, including Jim Carrey, David Alan Grier, and the Wayans clan, who reminisced about the show and thanked the viewers.
The B-52s ended the show with a performance of “Rock Lobster” while host Kelly Ripa dance with the Fly Girls. The TV Land Awards also honored classic programs “Pee Wee’s Playhouse,” “Murphy Brown,” “One Day at a Time,” and “Laverne & Shirley.” Among the other celebs on hand were Katie Couric, Mike Myers, Whoopi Goldberg and Fran Drescher.
